Why BMI Matters
Body Mass Index is a simple, universally used screening tool for estimating body fat based on your height and weight. While it doesn't measure body fat directly, BMI correlates strongly with more direct measures and is a valuable first step in understanding your health risks.
A BMI of 30 or higher is classified as obesity and significantly increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. If your BMI is in the obese range and lifestyle interventions have not produced lasting results, bariatric surgery may be the right next step.
