Find answers to common questions about bariatric surgery and your health journey.

General Questions

Generally, surgery is recommended for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher with significant obesity-related health problems like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or severe sleep apnea.

Morbid obesity is linked to many serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, joint disease, GERD, and increased risks for certain cancers and infertility.

About the Procedures

A Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure that reduces the size of the stomach. A Gastric Bypass is both restrictive and malabsorptive; it reduces stomach size and also bypasses a portion of the small intestine, which reduces calorie and nutrient absorption. The bypass is often more effective for resolving type 2 diabetes.

A Gastric Balloon is a non-surgical, temporary option. A soft balloon is placed in the stomach via endoscopy and filled with saline. It stays for 6 months to help you feel full and learn portion control. It’s ideal for those seeking moderate weight loss or who are not candidates for surgery.

Life After Surgery

For laparoscopic surgeries like the sleeve and bypass, hospital stay is typically 1-2 days. Most patients return to office work in 1-2 weeks and resume normal activities within 4-6 weeks. Recovery is much faster for the gastric balloon.

Yes, after malabsorptive procedures like the Gastric Bypass, lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies. For procedures like the Sleeve Gastrectomy, supplementation is also crucial, especially in the first year, and should be guided by your medical team.

Yes. In fact, weight loss often improves fertility. However, it is strongly recommended to wait at least 18-24 months after surgery before attempting pregnancy to ensure your body is nutritionally stable and your weight has stabilized.
