How Gastric Banding Works

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding is a purely restrictive procedure, meaning it works by limiting the amount of food you can consume at one time without altering the digestive system.

During this minimally invasive surgery, a soft, adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This creates a small pouch, about the size of a golf ball. When you eat, this small pouch fills up quickly, sending signals of fullness to the brain much sooner. The band is connected by a thin tube to an access port placed under the skin of the abdomen, allowing the surgeon to adjust the tightness of the band over time to meet your specific needs.

Key Features of the Gastric Band

The gastric band has several unique characteristics that set it apart.

Adjustable

The band can be tightened or loosened in a simple office visit to customize the level of restriction.

Reversible

The procedure does not involve any cutting or rerouting of the stomach or intestines and can be fully reversed if needed.

Preserves Absorption

Because the digestive tract is not altered, the risk of nutrient and vitamin deficiencies is significantly lower than with bypass surgery.

Important Considerations

While effective for many, it’s important to have a complete picture. Gastric banding generally results in slower and less total weight loss compared to sleeve or bypass surgery. Its popularity has declined in recent years due to the potential for long-term complications like band slippage or erosion, which may require re-operation. A thorough discussion with your surgeon is crucial to determine if this is the right choice for you.
